What a difference a year makes

A year ago, Making Minds was just a series of scribbled notes on various sheets of paper.

A string of meetings with community arts organisations, mental health organisations, business support organisations, artists and other interested individuals, we’re now a constituted group, with a clear set of aims, some good working relationships and a network of useful contacts.

A year ago, I set an initial aim of Making Minds being involved in an event for this year’s World Mental Health Day.

We’ll be achieving that, with interest.

We haven’t posted on here for a little while as we’ve been extremely busy working on our constitution, preparing for events and writing a funding application for a pilot project.

Next month, we’ll be attending four events:

4th October, World Mental Health Day event, Rhondda Sports Centre, Ystrad

9th October, World Mental Health Day event, Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre.

10th October, World Mental Health Day event, Ysbyty Cwm Cynon, Mountain Ash

23rd October, Mental Health Action Wales Conference, All Nations Centre, Cardiff

At the first two events, we will be raising awareness of Making Minds, consulting with people on the activities and services that they’d like to see us develop and showcasing art that has either been created by people with experience of mental ill health, or which raises awareness of the topic.

At Ysbyty Cwm Cynon, we will be working alongside Cwm Taf Local Health Board, New Horizons and Spectacle Theatre in an event that will feature music, theatre and art – all around a mental health theme.

At the Cardiff conference, I’ll be one of the speakers and we’ll also have an exhibition stand.

All of this is down to hard work, a great team and willing partner organisations – a big thank you to all involved! October is clearly THE month in the mental health calendar.

We also have Cardiff Mind Fest in late November – two days of live music, all to support local mental health work. We’re sponsoring a stage on the second day of that event and hosting mental health information stands.

It’s great to be involved in these events in the infancy of Making Minds. We have much to look forward to. Please say ‘hi’ if you’re at any of the above events.
